Is it appropriate to call your customers "honey" or "dear"?
If you're a female, would you think that the saleman/manager/waiter is trying to flirt with you?
If you're a guy, would you think the saleman/manager/waiter is gay?

i never call my clients honey or dear. but i have clients call me honey. they just do it because that is the way they are. i honestly think it is very common in the south to call someone honey or dear. but i wouldn't think that someone is trying to flirt with me if they call me honey or dear.
i will never forget....

I don't think it's "professional" to address your customers as such, unless you're in the sex business.

But anyhow, I think it's OK to use those terms, as long as your body language doesn't give off any slutty or flirty vibe.

It is not professional in a business environment, nor is it an element of elequette

I don't care if someone (male or female) call me dear or honey . . . normally it's a older gentleman or older woman who says it to me . . . as for me saying it . . . I only call my significant other Honey . . . as for dear . . . I don't use that term . . . the terms I use are sweetie and baby . . . but I normally say that to my kiddies in the family . . . even though my baby linh is almost 16, I still call her my baby =] I babysat her when she was a baby . . . =]

oh i use to call my friends sweetie and my boyfriend got made at me for it and didn't like it at all . . . his explanation was "what if our friend's girlfriend got the wrong idea" . . . so ever since then . . . I stopped . . . it's okae if i say it to a girl but not okae t o say it to a guy =/

I've had all sorts of people call me honey, sweetie, dear....females and males of various ages, but most of them were 20+ of age. It didn't really seem to mean anything, it's just what they called me. As for professionalism, it seems out of place to call someone honey, sweetie, or dear even if that person were your spouse.

Have no problem with a female calling a client calling them "honey". I do believe it's more heard of in the South. As for Dear.... haven't really heard anyone using it.

HONEY HONEY
SUGAR SUGAR

haha, i have that song stuck in my head

i think it depends on how it's used. Like an old matronly woman saying it to me wouldn't feel like harassment. But a leering salesman with greased back hair saying it to me would creep me out.

I called the kids I worked with honey, sweetie or kiddo but only the middle school ones. The high schoolers I called them by their name.

I don't give my customers terms of endearments... no... either their name or nothing at all.

with Blankspace on this one

Usually the only "honey" I hear are from older ladies. Probably what they call their grandkids and it carries over into conversation. On occasion, there's the friendly bar hostess or waitress.

Depends on the setting. Office setting, pretty unacceptable. A coworker has accidentally called me honey on a couple of occasions... usually cause she's distracted and just got off the phone with her husband. Laugh it off.
